Handy Heroes!

Calendar Until Sep 1, 2026
Time Sunday 12pm-4pm; Monday-Thursday 10am-5pm

Description

Join us in providing essential services to our neighbors experiencing homelessness at our Bithlo Outreach Center. At SALT, our mission relies heavily on ensuring our facilities run smoothly. This often requires fixing or installing essential items. That's where our handy-heroes come in! Whether you're building racks for donations, adding hooks to trailers, or installing ADA grab bars, your skills are invaluable to us. If you have the expertise, consider signing up and becoming one of our heroes! Shifts will be scheduled based on current needs and new projects are listed below. Since our selection of tools is somewhat limited, you are welcome to bring your own tools if you have them available.

CURRENT PROJECTS:

  • None at the moment! We invite you to join our "on-call" handy-hero team by contacting our volunteer coordinator via email at volunteer@saltoutreach.org.

How to Sign Up:

To schedule your volunteer shift, click 'Respond' at the top right of the page or scroll below to view available shifts. Morning and afternoon shifts are 3 hours each. Let us know in the notes if you need to leave early so we can accommodate accordingly. Please sign up at least 24 hours in advance so we can know how many volunteers to expect the next day.

Orientation Details:

Orientation sessions begin at 9:00 AM (morning shift) and 1:00 PM (afternoon shift), followed by a tour of our outreach center for new volunteers. We ask that you arrive on time to participate in the orientation, complete your training, and sign in for your volunteer shift. You will receive a volunteer badge to wear during your service. Please remember to return this badge at the end of your volunteer shift.

Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Drilling, installing, assembling, etc.

  • Assessing broken items.

  • Provide ideas for how to improve facilities.

Attire Requirements for Safety and Comfort:

  • Tops:  Plain T-shirts, non-offensive graphics tee's, loose breathable fabrics.

  • Shorts: Knee or above knee length, loose breathable fabrics.

  • Shoes: Sneakers, closed toe shoes.

  • Jewelry: Limit or hide large/long chains, no large hoop earrings, or excessive rings (you may be wearing gloves).

Additional Notes:

This role requires sensitivity to guest needs and a willingness to interact with diverse populations. The individuals we serve are experiencing homelessness and may also be navigating mental health struggles or substance use. It's important to approach each interaction with empathy and respect for their circumstances.

While we ask for this level of consideration from our volunteers, we also prioritize the safety of our staff, volunteers, and guests. We have a Safety & Support Team to help manage and de-escalate any situations that may arise, ensuring a safe environment for all.

We encourage volunteers to document and share their experiences on social media to help raise awareness and support for our cause. However, we ask that you respect our guest’s privacy and refrain from photographing anyone’s face.

Your commitment and compassion can make a significant difference in the lives of those we serve. Thank you for your dedication to helping our community.
