Description

Join us in providing essential services to our neighbors experiencing homelessness at our Downtown Orlando Comprehensive Mobile Drop-in Center. By volunteering to provide haircuts and shaves, you play a crucial role in enhancing the hygiene, self-esteem, and employment opportunities of individuals experiencing homelessness.

How to Sign Up:

This opportunity requires a barber or cosmetology license, or verification of current schooling. We have some haircut tools, but we do encourage folks to bring their own. If you would like to serve with us, contact our volunteer coordinator at volunteer@saltoutreach.org.

Orientation Details:

Orientation sessions will be scheduled individually. Kindly have your license or proof of enrollment in a barbering or cosmetology program when you contact us. During your orientation, you will receive a volunteer badge to wear during your shift. Please remember to return this badge at the end of your volunteer shift.

Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • Set up tools and station.
  • Maintain hygiene and cleanliness of the station.
  • Communicate with the SALT team.
  • Engage our guests with care and respect.
  • Report all cuts and shaves completed.
  • Close, disinfect, and clean up the station at the end of your volunteer shift.
  • Return barber capes to the indoor laundry room to be cleaned by staff.

Attire Recommendations for Safety and Comfort:

  • Tops: Plain T-shirts or non-offensive graphic tees, made of breathable fabrics.
  • Bottoms: Knee-length or above knee-length shorts, or loose breathable pants (khakis, cargos, sweats, scrubs, jeans).
  • Shoes: Closed-toe sneakers or shoes.
  • Jewelry: Avoid large chains, large hoop earrings, or excessive rings, especially when gloves may be worn.

Additional Notes:

This role requires sensitivity to guest needs and a willingness to interact with diverse populations. Many of the individuals we serve are experiencing homelessness and may also be navigating mental health struggles or substance use. It's important to approach each interaction with empathy and respect for their circumstances.

While we ask for this level of consideration from our volunteers, we also prioritize the safety of our staff, volunteers, and guests. We have contracted a security company to help manage and deescalate any situations that may arise, ensuring a safe environment for everyone.

We encourage volunteers to share their experiences on social media to help raise awareness and support for our cause. However, we ask that you always seek permission before taking photos with clients to respect their privacy and dignity.

Your commitment and compassion can make a significant difference in the lives of those we serve. Thank you for your dedication to helping our community.

Additional Information on the Need for Barbershop Services:

  1. Boosting Self-Esteem and Dignity: Regular haircuts and shaves can significantly improve someone's self-esteem and confidence. These services offer out guests a sense of normalcy and respect.
  2. Improving Employment Opportunities: A well-groomed appearance can enhance job prospects. Studies show that people with neat haircuts are more likely to secure employment.
  3. Health and Hygiene Benefits: Maintaining proper grooming helps in preventing infestations and infections, promoting better overall health.

By volunteering in this capacity, you help provide a vital service that supports the health, dignity, and employment prospects of our community members experiencing homelessness. Your efforts contribute to creating a more compassionate and supportive environment.
